BIPA is a language program designed for non-native speakers of Indonesian who wish to learn the Indonesian language (Bahasa Indonesia). It trains international students to actively communicate in both written and spoken Bahasa Indonesia. BIPA program is also intended to introduce Indonesian cultures and arts to foreign speakers. University of Muhammadiyah Purwokerto (UMP) provides a scholarship for BIPA course for foreigner.
 
Students who are studying at UMP for a particular time through a student exchange program or a mobility program. The participants do not only learn Bahasa Indonesia but also culture of Indonesia. This program also includes outdoor activities such as attending arts workshop, field trip, and visiting cultural sites and tourism places. Art workshop provides room and trainer for the participants to learn traditional dances, songs, and local musical instrument. Besides travelling package to tourism places in Central Java and around, participants have field trip to cultural sites, museums, health care center, government office, traditional market and other institutions related to the topic given in the class. After joining the course, the students are expected to be able to communicate naturally in spoken and written Indonesian both formal and informal situations and appreciate diverse Indonesian cultures.
 
BIPA Program and length of Study:
 
1. Regular program (3 months)
The regular program takes three months and runs anytime as it is requested. Classes are scheduled five days a week: Monday to Friday from 9 am – 4 pm. The language skills taught cover speaking, reading, listening, writing, and vocabulary building using BIPA’s authentic materials. This program also includes art workshop, fieldtrip, and travelling. 
2. Short-visit program (1 month)
The short-visit program takes one month and runs anytime as it is requested. Classes are scheduled five days a week: Monday to Friday from 9 am – 4 pm. The language skills taught cover speaking, reading, listening, writing, and vocabulary building using BIPA’s authentic materials. This program also includes art workshop, fieldtrip, and travelling. 
3. Special program (2 weeks)
The special program with fieldtrip takes two weeks and runs anytime as it is requested. Classes are scheduled five days a week: Monday to Friday from 9 am –4 pm. This program focuses on practicing daily conversation. This program also includes art workshop and fieldtrip. 
 
UMP also provides free services for foreign students, which include:
 
  1. Pick up and drop off student to the airport (Jogjakarta or Jakarta)
  2. Assist students to apply KITAS and report to the police
  3. Assist students for their domestic difficulties (psychology consultations)
  4. Free health care at KLINIK UMP for common diseases (not including dental care)
