BIPA (Bahasa Indonesia for the Speaker of Other Languages) Universitas Muhammadiyah Purwokerto (UMP) shows its existence to the world. Last year, Santhy Hawanti, Ph.D., the Director of International Affairs Office, taught Bahasa Indonesia at Sofia University, Bulgaria through the SAME (Scheme for Academic Mobility and Exchange) BIPA (Bahasa Indonesia untuk Penutur Asing) Program from Kemenristek Dikti (the Ministry of Research, Technology, and Higher Education) of Republic of Indonesia.

This year, another lecturer of BIPA UMP continues Santhy’s duty to introduce Indonesian language, arts and cultures to the university students in Sofia, Bulgaria. She is Titik Wahyuningsing, M.Hum., a lecturer of faculty of letter as well as BIPA tutor of UMP. She teaches Bahasa Indonesia at Sofia University from October 2016 to January 2017. At Sofia University, Bahasa Indonesia has become an optional course for the students to take.

Titik teaches Bahasa Indonesia not only to the students of Sofia University but also common people in Sofia city who want to learn the language in the Indonesian Embassy office. “On the first day of Bahasa Indonesia class at the Embassy there was a young girl with her mother attending the class. After it finished I asked their opinion about the class, and they were enthusiastic to come in the next meeting,” she said.

Besides teaching, Titik also does diplomatic cooperation such as making Memorandum of Understanding between UMP and institutions in Sofia. From 2017, UMP will consistently send its lecturers to teach Bahasa Indonesia at Sofia University.  (Nov)
