Bahasa Indonesia untuk Penutur Asing (BIPA) Program of Universitas Muhammadiyah Purwokerto (UMP) was officially established in 2014. Since then, the program has developed very rapidly due to the support from the university. Up to now, BIPA Program UMP has 18 lecturers who are all certified and competent.

Novi Haryanti, M.Pd., one of BIPA lecturers of UMP, is currently teaching Bahasa Indonesia in Santichon Islamic School, Bangkok, Thailand. She was assigned by the Center of Strategy and Language Diplomacy Development of the Ministry of Education and Culture of Republic of Indonesia. Novi has been teaching in the school since the middle of this year.

“The students knew nothing about Bahasa Indonesia at first, but I always try to prepare my teaching very well so that finally they understand and can speak the language. They are very enthusiastic. I enjoy teaching them,” said Novi.

Novi was previously contracted to teach in that school for 4 months only. However, seeing her quality in teaching BIPA, Santichon school prolongs her contract until December 2017. Novi also has done a number of diplomatic activity such as making Memorandum of Understanding between UMP and some universities and schools in Thailand as well as attending a number of events held by the Indonesian Embassy in the country.
